1. UP PCS Preliminary Examination: The Preliminary Examination is the first stage of the UP PCS examination. It consists of two papers – Paper I and Paper II. Both papers are objective-type and carry a maximum of 200 marks each. Paper I consists of questions from General Studies, while Paper II consists of questions from CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test). The duration of each paper is two hours.
2. UP PCS Mains Examination: The Mains Examination is the second stage of the UP PCS examination. It consists of eight papers, including four compulsory papers and four optional papers. The compulsory papers include General Hindi, Essay, General Studies Paper I, and General Studies Paper II. The optional papers are selected by the candidates based on their educational background and interest. The maximum marks for each paper are 200, and the duration of each paper is three hours.
3. UP PCS Interview: The Interview is the final stage of the UP PCS examination. Candidates who qualify for the Mains Examination are called for an interview conducted by the UP Public Service Commission. The interview carries a maximum of 100 marks.

The selection of candidates for the UP PCS examination is based on their performance in the Preliminary, Mains, and Interview stages. Candidates who qualify for all three stages are offered a post in the state government’s civil services.

The Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) conducts the Combined State/Upper Subordinate Services Examination, commonly known as UP PCS, for recruitment to various civil services posts in the state government of Uttar Pradesh. The UP PCS examination consists of three stages: Preliminary examination, Mains examination, and Interview.

1. Preliminary Examination:

• The preliminary examination consists of two objective-type papers – General Studies I and General Studies II.
• General Studies I includes questions related to Indian Polity, Indian Economy, History, Geography, Environment, Ecology, etc. It also includes current affairs of national and international importance. This paper carries a weightage of 200 marks.
• General Studies II includes questions related to Logical Reasoning, Comprehension, Interpersonal Skills, etc. It also includes questions on Hindi Language Comprehension. This paper carries a weightage of 200 marks.
• Both papers are of 2 hours in duration and are conducted in offline mode (pen and paper-based).
• The question papers are available in both Hindi and English languages.
• Each correct answer carries 1 mark, and there is a negative marking of 0.33 marks for each incorrect answer.

2. Mains Examination:

• The main examination consists of eight papers – four General Studies papers and four Optional Subject papers.
• The four General Studies papers include a General Hindi Essay (compulsory) and three other papers related to Indian Polity, Indian Economy, History, Geography, Environment and Ecology, Ethics, Public Administration, and Current Affairs of National and International importance.
• The Optional Subject papers are selected by the candidates from a given list of subjects. Each optional subject consists of two papers.
• Each paper carries a weightage of 200 marks, and the duration of each paper is 3 hours.
• The mains examination is conducted in offline mode (pen and paper-based).
• The question papers are available in both Hindi and English languages.

3. Interview:

• The candidates who qualify for the mains examination are called for an interview, which carries a weightage of 100 marks.
• The interview is conducted to assess the candidate’s personality, communication skills, and suitability for the civil services posts.
• The final merit list is prepared based on the marks obtained by the candidates in the main examination and the interview.
