UPSC IES Eligibility 2023:
To be eligible for the UPSC IES exam, candidates must fulfill the following eligibility criteria:

Nationality: The candidate must be a citizen of India, a subject of Nepal, Bhutan, or a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before 1st January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India.
- Age Limit: The candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have crossed the age of 30 years on 1st January of the year in which the notification for the exam is issued. However, there is age relaxation for certain categories as per government norms.

Educational Qualification: The candidate must have an engineering degree from a recognized university or an equivalent qualification. Candidates who are in their final year of engineering degree courses can also apply, provided they submit proof of passing the degree exam before the specified date.

UPSC IES Exam Pattern:
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Indian Engineering Services (IES) examination, which is also known as the Engineering Services Examination (ESE). It is a competitive exam conducted annually for recruitment to various engineering posts in the government of India. The IES exam consists of three stages: Preliminary examination, Mains examination, and Personality Test/Interview.
Let’s take a closer look at the exam pattern of each stage:
Preliminary Examination:
- The preliminary examination consists of two objective-type papers – Paper I (General Studies and Engineering Aptitude) and Paper II (Engineering Discipline-specific).
- Paper I includes questions related to General Awareness, Current Affairs, Reasoning and Analytical Ability, Engineering Aptitude, etc. This paper carries a weightage of 200 marks.
- Paper II includes questions related to the candidate’s Engineering Discipline (Civil/Mechanical/Electrical/Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering). This paper also carries a weightage of 200 marks.
- Both papers are of 2 hours in duration and are conducted in offline mode (pen and paper-based).
- The question papers are available in English language only.
- Each correct answer carries 1 mark, and there is a negative marking of 0.33 marks for each incorrect answer.
Mains Examination:
- The mains examination consists of two conventional-type papers – Paper I and Paper II. Each paper is of 3 hours duration and carries a weightage of 300 marks.
- Paper I includes questions related to the candidate’s Engineering Discipline, and Paper II includes questions related to Engineering Discipline-specific. Candidates are required to write the answers in essay format.
- The mains examination is conducted in offline mode (pen and paper-based).
- The question papers are available in English language only.
Personality Test/Interview:
- The candidates who qualify for the mains examination are called for a Personality Test/Interview, which carries a weightage of 200 marks.
- The interview is conducted to assess the candidate’s personality, communication skills, and suitability for the engineering posts.
- The final merit list is prepared based on the marks obtained by the candidates in the mains examination and the interview.
How to Apply for UPSC IES 2023 Pre-Exam:
- The applicants in order to apply for the UPSC Engineering Services Preliminary Exam must visit the official portal of the UPSC which is upsconline.nic.in.
- There they must click on the tab Apply online for UPSC Engineering Services Preliminary Exam 2023.
- Then they must fill out the application form by entering their all personal and academic details in the form.
- Then they must upload documents like a signature, photo, etc.
- Now submit the application fee.
- Then they should take the printout of the form after submitting the same.
- The applicants must submit the exam application fee.
- The fee to apply for the UPSC Engineering Services Preliminary Exam is Rs.100
- There is no fee for the Female and SC/ST/PWD category candidates.
